7 Tips to Prevent Goggle Fogging

PowPow Ice Blue Snow Goggles

Your snow goggles are an essential piece of gear for any day out on the slopes. While they certainly add some style while you shred, you’re relying on them for their performance. Even though some goggles have built-in anti-fogging technology (including ours!), Fogging can still happen. Don’t let fogging damper your day and thrills on the snow. Here are 7 tips to prevent goggles from fogging and allow you to get the most out of your ski or snowboard day.

#1 Don’t Tuck Your Face Layer Underneath

Many skiers and snowboarders like to keep their face completely covered by tucking a face mask under their goggles to stay warm. This is the worst thing you can do because warm air escapes from your mouth and nose and has nowhere to go except straight up to your eyes, causing your pair to get fogged up really quick. It’s best to leave your face covering under your nose to allow humid air to escape and keep your vision crystal clear.

#2 Leave Your Goggles Out to Dry Before Packing Away

When your done skiing or snowboarding for the day, it’s best to let your goggles dry off a bit before stowing them away in their case or in your bag. Storing wet goggles can actually allow a little moisture to permeate between the lenses which can cause future fogging issues. Once they are dry, the ski goggles can then be put back in their lens protector or in their case so they can be safe until your next adventure on the snow.

#3 Keep the Vents Clear

A good pair of fog free ski goggles will have strong ventilation. Make sure all the vents are open to allow airflow. Throughout the day or after a fall, snow and moisture can accrue thus blocking air from getting in. Lightly tapping your goggles can free any snow from the vents.

#4 Don’t Overdress for the Conditions

While it’s important to dress comfortably for the snow, you want to avoid overdressing. Your body is like an oven giving off a lot heat. The more you wear, the more heat and moisture you will give off. This moisture can get near your goggles and buildup causing fogging. If you feel like you’re overheating, shedding some layers can keep you comfortable and your goggles clear.

#5 Once You Put Them on Keep Them On!

Don’t rest your goggles on your head or helmet. Your body is generating heat, and since heat rises humid air can enter your goggles causing moisture buildup. It’s best to leave your pair on your face, once you decide to put them on. When you do use your goggles, make sure that they are properly fitted. Loose goggles on your face make it more likely for your breath to enter the frame and steam up your pair.

#6 Avoid Wiping with Your Gloves

Using your gloves or paper products to wipe excess moisture of your goggles may actually just push water into the frame and foam components, making it even harder to stop the fogging. Even worse, it could scratch your lens. If you absolutely must wipe your goggles down, we recommend using a microfiber cloth to avoid damage. Our lens protectors can also be used to safely clean and dry off the lens.

#7 Air Them Out

Fogging occurs because moisture gets trapped in the goggles. Excessive sweating could be the culprit for this moisture buildup. It’s important your pair stays dry and as close to the outside temperature as possible. Airing them out can quickly rid of excess moisture. All of Detour Sunglasses’ Snow Goggles have a triple layer foam frame with fleece lining to help absorb sweat moisture and come with a QuickGrip Magnetic Lens System allowing you to quickly and effortlessly remove and change lenses. If your pair gets wet, you can simply remove the lens to air them out fast so you can keep crushing runs all day long.
